“An interesting intermezzo is the chamber work Ex nihilo for soprano, clarinet (or bass clarinet), violin, cimbalom, and piano, written for the Ensemble Ricercata. The female voice (Helga Varga Bach) is the central element, singing a single Hebrew word – bárá – suggesting creation from nothing. Creation is a drama and a dialogue of sharp contrasts; the choice of urgent rhythmic structures and dissonances, as well as the sound combinations of the unusually arranged ensemble, reveal how much absolute concentration on a single theme, a single word, can stimulate Borzík’s imagination.”
